For a long time short-term rentals were immensely profitable in New Zealand, but is that still the case in 2025?
For a long time short-term rentals were immensely profitable in New Zealand, but is that still the case in 2025?

Are short-term rentals such as Airbnbs and Bookabaches worth it in New Zealand in 2025?

We think so…

Let's look at one of our properties, a three-bedroom bach in a coastal city. For the first six months of the year the earnings are below.

Earnings for January - $4560.12,

Earnings for February - $3230.27

Earnings for March- $2479.18

Earnings for April - $2130.98

For the first four months of the year that’s $12,400.55 in earnings.

As you can see summer months are where the money is. Kiwis are out and about, on holidays and travellers are flooding into the country. Winter is quieter with less tourists and many Airbnbs will lower their prices to stay competitive. However this depends on where you are - Queenstown, Wanaka, Ohakune and other ‘winter towns’ see the opposite to ‘summer towns’ such as Raglan, Oakura and Akaroa.

Of course, there are hidden costs to Airbnbs. Cleaning, laundry, electricity and disposables such as toiletpaper all add to the cost of owning and running one. If you earn over $60,000 as a business or sole trader you need to register for GST.

Marketing your property can also be tough
